Legal Harassment by Corporates

The authors highlight how few corporate uses legal means to harass journalists and undermine democracy.  It is known as Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation (SLAPP). Justice S Ravindra Bhat of the Delhi High Court, probably for the first time used the term SLAPP in a petition filed by Crop Care Federation of India (CCFI) against Rajasthan Patrika. The newspaper in early 2004 highlighted the adverse effects of pesticides and insecticides on human health. Justice Bhat observed: Free speech and expression is the life blood of democracy. Any action-even civil injunctions, damages or threat to damages, are bound to chill the exercise of that invaluable right of the people, and the press.
